REVIEW | Guardians of the Galaxy

By Pedro Cooray

Based on the titular comics, five intergalactic outlaws join forces to fight a common evil. It’s a barrelling snowball of mindless action, and good jokes, mixed with doses of genuine emotion. Essentially, a live-action Pixar movie.

Unfortunately, the film feels trapped by being part of the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could be two-thirds as long if it didn’t spend so long setting up next year’s Avengers 2, as those scenes add frustratingly little to the plot.

It hits a sweet spot between action and drama without alienating fans of either. It’s dumb and it’s shallow, but you’ll probably want to watch it twice.
