Swine @ Groovin’ 2014

Groovin’ the Moo, Australia’s foremost rural and or regional festival returned this year with a fully stacked line-up of local and international acts. The line-up managed to straddle the line between large hype bands, up and comers and festival favourites.

After a warm welcome to the festival by Andy Bull’s sweet, electronic sounds, The Jungle Giants followed, serving up a slice of ripped jeans and indie pop.

The crowd swooned over Vance Joy’s ukulele skills and wistful melodies. A large crowd materialised as the opening chords of ‘Riptide’ rung out through the show grounds.

Violent Soho brought their pot fuelled A-game to a crowd so large, punters spilled out the sides of the Moolin Rouge tent, onto surrounding field. Fans fought tooth and nail for a spot on the barrier, showing that the hype surrounding the Queensland crew is still very much alive.

Cults, who shared the same time slot, brought their dreamy New Yorker vibes to a modest, afternoon crowd.

Architecture in Helsinki proved that you’re never too old for coordinated outfits and dance moves, exciting the freezing crowd with their infectious pop.

The Jezabels showcased their ability to make every song in their set sound like ‘Mace Spray’, giving members of the crowd the opportunity to grab some dinner or duck off to the loo without feeling liked they missed anything.

As the sun began to go down the damp and cold set in, luckily we had more performances to look forward to.

Dizzee Rascal took to the stage with his singer, Daniel Pearce, and MC Scope for an energetic performance. However, neglecting to perform crowd favourite, ‘Sirens’, left a hole in the set, which was not-so-adequately filled by his newer material.

Capping off a day of downpours, dancing, drunkenness, and Dagwood Dogs, was the much talked about Disclosure. The excited crowd improved what could have been an underwhelming set. By neglecting to bring any of their feature artists on the tour Down Under, their performance left a lot to be desired outside a soundtrack to a funky light show.

A smaller venue and a country crowd lends a distinctive atmosphere to Groovin’. Unlike festivals like BDO and Soundwave you’re given enough time to see everyone you wished for. Most clashes can be avoided and the stages are close enough that running from one to the other is a practical choice.
